About
Elizabeth Ann Peskin is a Partner at Shepard Law, P.A., where she defends clients facing felony and misdemeanor charges throughout Florida’s 14th Judicial Circuit. She joined the firm in March 2022.
Few attorneys have seen a criminal case from as many sides. Ms. Peskin has defended the indigent as a public defender, practiced at one of the country’s largest international law firms, run her own practice for thirteen years, prosecuted felonies for the State, and now defends. Each of those roles taught her something different about how a case is built, where it is vulnerable, and what matters to the person at the center of it.
From Prosecution to Defense
From 2019 to 2022 Ms. Peskin served as an Assistant State Attorney, prosecuting felony cases in Bay County and misdemeanors in Jackson County. During that period she worked closely with local law enforcement on unlicensed construction cases arising in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael.
Having built cases for the State, she knows how a prosecution file is assembled, which parts of it hold up and which do not, and how decisions get made inside the State Attorney’s Office. That is knowledge a defense attorney cannot acquire from the outside.
Career
Ms. Peskin began her career at King & Spalding, an international law firm, before moving to indigent defense as a public defender in Tallahassee from 2003 to 2006. She then opened the Law Office of Elizabeth Peskin, which she ran for thirteen years handling criminal defense and family law matters, before joining the State Attorney’s Office in 2019.
She has also served as a Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator for the 2nd and 14th Judicial Circuits, and has taught Legal Negotiations as an Adjunct Professor at the Florida State University College of Law.
Why Criminal Defense
Ms. Peskin moved to Panama City when she married. She was drawn to criminal defense during a criminal defense clinic in law school, and it has shaped the direction of her career ever since.
